I’ve seen so many truly amazing gift guides on Substack lately—way better than the recycled “shop my Amazon storefront” lists that dominate Instagram. While I’d love to create one myself, I don’t feel hip or well-traveled enough to pull it off, so I’ll leave that to the experts. However, I do have something to share!
When I think about my happiest moments, they often revolve around giving gifts. I adore surprising people. And beyond the gifts themselves, I'm obsessed with the details the perfect wrap, ribbon, and all the finishing touches.
Wrapping Paper Favorites:
Paper Source Single Sheets: They have a huge selection of single-sheet wrapping paper, perfect for a few special gifts. Sometimes I like to do a whole themed look for birthdays, with different but coordinating sheets (think all blues or all animal prints). Just keep in mind what you're wrapping—bigger gifts might need more than one sheet.
Pepin von Roojen: If you struggle with storing wrapping paper rolls (ours are currently stuffed in a closet), these are a lifesaver. They come in books with gorgeous, thick sheets in various themes. Super practical and really beautiful.
Butcher Paper: A simple staple that's endlessly versatile. You can write messages on it or pair it with a nice ribbon to dress it up or keep it casual. It's always good to have some on hand.
Midori Wrapping Paper: It’s a splurge, but the quality is amazing—super thick and made from 100% cotton, with really unique prints. Definitely worth it if you want something special.
Papyrus: A solid choice for good-quality rolls, especially for important occasions.
Caspari: Perfect when you need a sturdy, festive roll for the holidays.
Ribbon Recommendations:
Grosgrain: My go-to lately. It’s sturdy yet still looks elegant, making it great for everything from kids' gifts to party presents. I especially like the 1/2-inch width.
Double-Faced Satin: It’s just beautiful—smooth on both sides and perfect for a luxe look. Single-faced satin works, but this is definitely a step up.
Organza Ribbon: It can feel a bit traditional, but I still use it, especially for holiday gifts or wedding showers. Wireless organza is the most polished option.
Raffia: Cute for more casual, rustic gifts, like housewarming presents. I used to mix colors and wrap it around butcher paper for a fun look.
Silk Chiffon: This one’s more of a splurge and can really elevate a simple gift. It’s often what florists use for wedding bouquets, and it pairs beautifully with butcher paper. Love this one with butcher paper
Velvet Ribbon: Adds such a nice texture for winter gifts. I love using it around the holidays.
Midori: I mentioned them under wrapping paper, but their ribbons are also amazing. They have a french silk that has texture and I love so much. So many fun options, like this Inca ribbon, Japanese black ribbon (i LOVE black ribbon, especially with this mushroom paper.
Hope this inspires your next wrapping session! And if you're in Marin, hit me up—I’d love to help wrap your gifts.
